VERMILLION, S.D. – Al Neuharth, founder of USA TODAY and the Freedom Forum, talked to students attending the American Indian Journalism Institute at opening ceremonies June 3.
Twenty-one students are enrolled in college journalism courses taught at the seventh annual AIJI, a joint program of the Freedom Forum and the University of South Dakota held at the Al Neuharth Media Center. The Oyate Singers, a Lakota drum group, performed at the event.

Great Job!
I just wanted to wish the AIJI 07 students the best of luck. Have fun and enjoy your three weeks (now a week and a half!) with the Freedom Forum, USD and AIJI. When I attended in 03, it was still being tweaked, but it was still a blast. I hope they are still having sundae night and taking you on cool trips. I was fortunate to take pictures at the Cubs game four years ago and now I get paid to get close to the action. AIJI put me on the path to becoming a sportswriter, it's not hard news writing, but my boss told me that when I started after I came home from AIJI, sales increased because the newspaper was able to cover more sports in the county, namely Indian Country. There are no better people on earth than those working with you right now, trust them and ask a lot of questions. Bless...
Dedicated and eager to learn
All the students, faculty, and guest speakers I have met at AIJI are dedicated and eager to get moving in the morning. Nothing stands in the way of these eager hungry hearted writers. The enthusiasm I have witness shoves me further in the right direction.
Thanks for this opportunity.
Greetings
I wanted to welcome all the new and returning AIJI students. I hope you have a great experience this month and look forward to working with you in the future. I'll be reading your every blog entry and posting your articles and slideshows. And, what a DAMN good-looking crew this year, I might add.
Best,
Steve
