HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii state Rep. Karen Awana is the new treasurer for the National Caucus of Native American State Legislators.
Awana, a Democrat representing Nanakuli, was recently elected to the post by her peers.
Awana, who is Native Hawaiian, says she's honored to work alongside Native American counterparts to work on issues that affect indigenous peoples.
Awana also was named chair of the caucus' Economic Development Committee.
The group was formed in 1992 and is comprised of about 80 members from 18 states. Membership is open to all Native American, Alaska native and Native Hawaiian state legislators.
