For Jasa Santos, her 17-hour drive from her hometown Arlee, Mont. to Vermillion, S.D. was quite peaceful except for a few spots of rain, risky driving and shopping binges.
A 17 hour drive in her 2004 Pontiac GrandAm would seem financially impossible for other drivers this day and age what with the gas prices being so high. But this did not faze her.
Santos graduated from the University of Montana on May 12 with a major in Print Journalism. The commute from her home in Arlee to Missoula was 30 miles and buying gas nearly everyday was not such a problem for her.
“It doesn’t really faze me anymore,” Santos said.
Paying for gas for a 17 hour drive was not a problem for Santos, but the weather did have its affect. Near Rapid City there was rain, which is always hazardous for drivers.
A drive this long had a negative effect on her concentration as well. Constant zoning out made her somewhat of a risky driver but music kept her entertained.
The most fun part of being on a trip alone is having the freedom of singing as loud as she wanted and not worrying about passengers complaining about the volume.
Averil Lavinge’s popular song, “Hey you,” was her favorite song because it reminded her of cheerleaders and their lifestyle.
The other part of traveling alone is that Santos had the chance to plan her own stops. So when she had the chance she stopped in Billings, the same town where she held a job working with the Billings Gazette and the same town where the Rimrock Mall is located.
In the Rimrock Mall, Wet Seal is where Santos spent most of her time shopping for jewelry and kept her at the mall for a while. And because of this shopping rest stop she was late getting up the next morning and delayed her trip.
The American Indian Journalism Institute (AIJI) was the initial occasion of her trip and the final destination.
Attending AIJI, a three week institute, Santos hopes to broaden her experience in multimedia. She believes it is a huge part of news today, which inspires journalists to know a little bit about everything.
“Not knowing how to do it alienates you,” Santos said about multimedia.
Approximately 1,000 miles away from home, Santos is dedicated to her career in journalism.

I'm also a proud possesor of a grandam pontiac and I don't think it's financially impossible for a 17 hours driving. The mixt consume of gas is 7.5 and I don't think it's too much.
