Step Up and Be Heard

Why is it important to have a Native voice in the media?

I feel that we need more Natives writing for newspapers and on the evening news. We just need more Natives out there, period! Being Native, we have come from many different walks of life and we see things in a whole different light. We have lived through the experiences that make the headlines and survived to tell the story!

Man Dives Into the Grand Canyon

An unidentified man was killed Monday morning when his car fell off the edge and into the Grand Canyon.  Authorities received several reports of a car driving off the edge of the canyon around 6 am Monday morning.  When authorities arrived at the scene they found tire tracks leading to the edge behind the Thunderbird Lodge. Rescue personnel descended 600 feet into the canyon and retrieved the body.  The incident happened on the canyon's South Rim. Authorities have not ruled the death a suicide.

Grave Digging Scandal

Eight families are filing lawsuits today against a graveyard in Chicago, Illinois.  These families claim the bodies of their loved ones were removed from their resting spots and dumped in a back area of the cemetery so the plots can be sold again. Suspects arrested and charged in the case are 49-year old Carolyn Towns, 45-year-old Keith Nicks, 39-year-old Terrence Nicks and 61-year-old Maurice Dailey.  Cook County authorities announced yesterday they believe more than 300 graves were tampered with by the suspects.

FTC: Friend? or Foe?

It is being said that companies are paying people to write positive blogs about their products. Alledgedly they recieve payments such as free laptops, trips to Europe, and large sums of money among other gifts. The FTC (Federal Trade Comission) wants to set down rules and guidelines for bloggers in order to stop these false advertisements. This is great for the consumers that take these blogs seriously, but technically isn't it violating "freedom of speech"? And just a side note to remember, the commercials on T.V have paid actors as well. Something to think about.

Human Interest Profile:

I officially started my Human Interest Profile for class today.  I decided to write about Rob Parker-Ortley.  He is a native kid that is a part of the Lawrence Youth Ensamble.  His group did a play over the weekend. I decided I liked his ambition and his ease in front of a crowd.  Today I did a phone interview with Rachael Perry, one of the counselors in charge of the Youth Center Ensemble. On Thursday I will do the actual interview with Rob and his mother. Cant wait. Pretty sure this assignment is going to be handed in late :(

  • Tell us what you think about the 'Navajobama' T-shirt, and we'll send your comments to the manufacturer—and to the Obama for President campaign. (No profanities, please.)

  • Omission disappoints Native Americans attending the presidential candidate's speech in Wisconsin. Others express concern over Obama's stance on Indian gaming.

  • The Native actor’s role on 'Law and Order: SVU' is coming to an end, but he plans to stay busy with an Internet TV show, a book and a new baby.

  • A Tennessee high school, whose mascot is the Indians, takes the Native American motif one step further: It calls school grounds "The Reservation."

  • Native reaction to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain's vice presidential choice, is 'pretty mixed,' says one critic. A supporter says Palin 'has been open to and concerned about Alaska Native issues.'
