National Indian Taco Championship

On May 16, 2009 the Osage Nation held their 5th Annual National Indian Taco Championship in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The categories were classic or traditional Indian taco and "dessert" Indian taco. The classic or traditional category had to include frybread, meat, lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and green chilis were optional. There were no requirement or restrictions for the "dessert" category other than it had to include frybread. The prizes included $1500 for 1st, $1000 for 2nd, and $500 for 3rd. This sounds all fine and dandy but the kicker for me was the requirement for the winners; winners were required to release their "recipes" to the Osage Nation for promotional purposes.Where I come from (Comanch country) we don't have "recipes." We just make it! And another thing is that I just don't think I could eat frybread all prettied up in a dessert. A "Dessert" Indian taco just sounds kindof silly to me, but I am curious if someone served frybread a la mode. </p>

  • Tell us what you think about the 'Navajobama' T-shirt, and we'll send your comments to the manufacturer—and to the Obama for President campaign. (No profanities, please.)

  • Omission disappoints Native Americans attending the presidential candidate's speech in Wisconsin. Others express concern over Obama's stance on Indian gaming.

  • The Native actor’s role on 'Law and Order: SVU' is coming to an end, but he plans to stay busy with an Internet TV show, a book and a new baby.

  • A Tennessee high school, whose mascot is the Indians, takes the Native American motif one step further: It calls school grounds "The Reservation."

  • Native reaction to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain's vice presidential choice, is 'pretty mixed,' says one critic. A supporter says Palin 'has been open to and concerned about Alaska Native issues.'
