Tips on Finding Childcare

I want to offer some tips that address the issues that single mothers deal with on a daily basis, but I'm convinced that single motherhood and parenthood are a journey, and you learn something new every day.

Most of the time I'm trying to figure out things that seem so simple in a two-parent home, such as how to take garbage to the dumpster, but in my case, I have to worry about how to accomplish such a task without leaving my children alone.

Not having the two extra hands and legs to help me isn't the most difficult thing when it comes to raising my children alone.

However, on the days I'm sick or unable to pick up my children because of a pulled back muscle, that statement couldn't be more untrue.

Yet you find creative ways to fix the problems. And you get through it.

But even on my sickest days, or when I really need a break, I find out that I need reliable childcare, even reliable back-up childcare.

That is my key to accomplishing some of the tasks that I'm unable to do without leaving my children alone.

I find reliable childcare through state databases, word-of-mouth, referrals, and I have even asked the teachers at my children's current childcare provider if they offer drop-in services.

Most of the time, I miss being on the rez the most when I need emergency childcare, where I can drop my children off with Grandma anytime, and where there's a little cousin available to baby-sit just to make extra money.

Regardless, all these sources have all been promising. And once you find good childcare, pay them decently, and keep the provider on your side. You never know when you are going to need the extra help.

OH THE HORRORS OF CHILDCARE!!! How I miss being in my safe college community where everyone was supportive and super helpful. It's sad to say when you get out of college it's even more difficult to find childcare. I'm lucky enough to have a great daycare for my boys.... They will be in school in the fall.... HURRAY!!

I was so blessed to have great friends, close family and wonderful instructors who let me sneak my kids into class when I was in college.

My children still remember most of it, those are great memories.

Giving Back

Yes Yes I totally understand I am a grandma now. But when I was living off the rez attending college I sure wished that I had my mother down the road from me when I needed a sitter at moments notices. Today looking back at the struggles had I try my best to be there for all family members and the student-parents that are attending our tribal college I don't ask for payment. I have even turn my office into a mini dropoff-place while student are in class. I think I have watch just about everyone child around our reservation an all the students children know where my offices now. Kaala
