Gathering Goosebumps

Growing up in inner-city Cleveland doesn't lend itself to many opportunities for a Native American girl to meet other Natives.

In fact, for a long time I was just as convinced as everyone around me that Natives - outside of my own family, of course - didn't even exist anymore.  True ignorance at its best. That may sound stupid to a lot of people who grew up on reservations that might take this privilege for granted. For me it was truly a reality.

Suit Power

LINCOLN, Neb.—Before leaving school here for the Motor City and the Spirit of Diversity job fair, I remember asking myself, “How can I possibly convey to these recruiters that I want to be a serious candidate for their internships?”
That one little question made me so nervous. It also led me to a hundred different answers. But this is an anecdote about the one that cost me the most dinero.

Flip-Flops in December, How Weird Is That?

Today I wore flip-flops.

This may not seem blog-worthy, but it's December!

Shouldn't there be snow on the Nebraska landscape? Shouldn't it be so bitterly crisp that I need more than my fleece jacket to keep warm?

I'm not sure what the correct answers to that question are, but I'd like to defer to Al Gore instead.

After walking around sweaty today because I was dressed too appropriately for the winter season - with a scarf, turtleneck, and heavy jacket - I have to agree that there is a lot of credence to global warming.

  • Tell us what you think about the 'Navajobama' T-shirt, and we'll send your comments to the manufacturer—and to the Obama for President campaign. (No profanities, please.)
  • A Native American gay wedding ceremony takes place at a Two Spirit gathering in Montana.
  • The Native actor’s role on 'Law and Order: SVU' is coming to an end, but he plans to stay busy with an Internet TV show, a book and a new baby.
  • Omission disappoints Native Americans attending the presidential candidate's speech in Wisconsin. Others express concern over Obama's stance on Indian gaming.
  • Crows wait in line for more than six hours to hear the Democratic presidential candidate. 'Somebody finally recognized us enough to come an extra few hours,' says one tribal member.
