ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—From the Grammys to the Oscars, a new awards show is here.

The North American Indigenous Image Awards is the first awards show of its kind for Native America and Canadian Aboriginals. The first annual NAIIA will take place April 23 here and is hosted by Isleta Casino and Resort.

Award categories include Film, Music, Publication/Magazine, Comedy, Model/Calendar and an Honor category.

The show aims to honor outstanding and amazing talent from across North America. The show will feature and award artists from all genres of the entertainment industry such as film, television, news, music, radio, comedy, photography and fashion.

The event will accommodate entertainment celebrities, young professionals, agencies, managers, actors, musicians, models, filmmakers, designers and fans. The awards show will include a red carpet introduction, VIP seating, live performances and celebrity presenters.

This event will be the official entertainment awards show for Indigenous North America. The multitude of American Indians and Canadian Aboriginals in the Arts and Performing Arts require an avenue where talents will be recognized. This is an opportunity to benefit Indigenous people and also an opportunity for growth and recognition at the international level.

  • The Native actor’s role on 'Law and Order: SVU' is coming to an end, but he plans to stay busy with an Internet TV show, a book and a new baby.

  • A Tennessee high school, whose mascot is the Indians, takes the Native American motif one step further: It calls school grounds "The Reservation."

  • Native reaction to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain's vice presidential choice, is 'pretty mixed,' says one critic. A supporter says Palin 'has been open to and concerned about Alaska Native issues.'
