Native Group Asks for $5.4 billion

In what some will undoubtedly see as a shameless attempt to secure the health and welfare of the 2.4 million Indians living in the U.S., the National Congress of American Indians is asking president-elect Barack Obama for a fraction of the $775 billion economic stimulus package he is proposing.

Native Against Native Racism

When I first heard the term, "lateral racism" I was astounded that such a condition had a name and, sadly, that it existed long enough to earn that name. It's still a relatively new concept. When I searched for the term, one hit came up for the Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education in an article written by Ron Selden. In the article, Anishinaabe activist and writer, Winona LaDuke said, "We cannot struggle against the oppressor, so we struggle against each other ... "

Native Names

Sometimes Native American names sound too different for non-Native kids and they tease you about your name. But as you grow older, you realize you have a cool Native name that those other kids don't have and will never have.

Faith As A Tradition

Every Sunday, I rouse myself from my sleep, shower and get dressed for Jesus.

My brother is fond of mocking me, "You'd better hurry! God is only at the church between nine and eleven!" It's something I've come to accept as the only other member in my family who regularly practices Catholicism. The other member is my mother, who was educated by Catholic Jesuits at St. Francis Indian School.

Emma's Secret Box

Emma’s old shoe box turned into a small treasure chest to keep all her most important treasures, and she put it to use right away by delicately placing the leaves she collected from the park earlier that same day into her new secret box.

A Mother's Love

As I hug her, her body has transformed in my arms, I realize. The same goes for my son. They are growing up. Edward no longer a baby and Emma no longer a toddler, they are two healthy children growing daily in my arms, and, although, they have grown a lot, I don’t want them to outgrow the hugs and kisses, ever.

Looking Back on a Year Spent in Limbo

It's been a year in purgatory for Indian Country, which saw vital health legislation stall in Congress and perennial fights like the Cobell lawsuit and Freedmen controversy march on seemingly without end. But is a new day dawning for Native people?

Dakota 38+2 Ride on the way to Mankato

Today we arrived the American Legion in Pipestone, Minnesota to help serve breakfast to the riders.  It was amazing to see all the people.  Isaiah Miller from Pine Ridge said "My father Jim Miller had a dream and he is the one holding the staff."  Isaiah is from Pine Ridge.  The Lower Sioux Tribal Police have been helping provide a safe escort for the horses.  My daughter Kari helped serve Lunch at the Stephanie and Rich DeRuyter farm located in Ruthton, Minnesota.  The farm provided a warm place to stop between Pipestone and Russell, Minnesota.
