BIA tosses tribal court's order

A Seneca-Cayuga tribal court order that nearly caused what some tribal officials called a "hostile takeover" by the tribe's disputed chief last week is not valid, the Bureau of Indian Affairs says.

Sovereignty allows tribe exemption

New state rules for energy production probably won't apply to large parts of Southwest Colorado's gas patch.

The Southern Ute Indian Tribe and state gas regulators agreed Thursday that the Utes should continue to police their own lands.

Algonquin Community Opens Own School Over Language Fears

Parents and elders in the last Algonquin-speaking community in Canada have pulled most of their reserve's young children from an official government-run elementary school over what some in the community say is a continuing attempt to erase their language and culture. 

Native Americans deserve day of recognition 

On July 23, 2007, Sen. Daniel Inouye from Hawaii introduced Senate Bill 1852 and Rep. Joe Baca of California introduced House Resolution 3585 to establish on the American calendar a Native American Heritage Day, one day after Thanksgiving.
