The Yankton Sioux Tribe of Marty, S.D., is fighting Long View Farm's construction of a hog facility on non-Indian fee land within the reservation, which will produce more than 70,000 pigs annually.
In two weeks since April 15, 38 tribal members were arrested by state law enforcement while peacefully blocking construction on a BIA road. Most tribal members are opposed to the construction and are unaware of any consultation with the tribe for environmental permits. One Native American was injured when a skid loader rammed into him as he and others blocked the earth moving equipment.
Tribal members are protesting at the site seven days a week and report that construction is also still occurring seven days a week, even on Sunday. The people are praying that their attorneys will be successful at seeking an injunction to prevent the further construction of the hog farm.
The Tribe needs assistance with prayers, legal defense funds, and protesters. If you want to help, contact Oi Zephier, or go to ground zero in Marty, S.D. 605-454-8355.

Its all about TERO
The farm is not surrounded by tribal land. There is trust land bordering the hog farm to the north. The rest of the land is private, non-trust. The tribe didn't start protesting until the wheels were turning on the construction equipment. The tribal leadership was already counting and spending the TERO money they thought they had bilked out of this out of state farm. The intentions of this farm was front page news in the local papers for over a year. If they would have paid TERO there would not be a protest. If there really are concerns about the air and water, shame on the tribal leadership for not protesting during the license hearing period. They only protested when the TERO check never arrived
Jurisdiction
If this land is surrounded by Indian land how can the county or state stop, let alone arrest tribal members from blocking access to this site? Start doing your homework. Find out all you can about these individuals trying to build this hog farm. Where are they getting their money to build this farm? Any kind of ties (friendship, financial and political) with county, state or tribal officials? Yes there are some tribal members who would sell out the their tribes!
