Any menu featuring Indian tacos is a good friend of mine

By Santee Ross

A good Indian taco is the most amazing food in the world. When I think of Indian taco I think of a gathering like a powwow or auntie’s house and now, apparently, a little place in Denver called Tocabe.

The food network’s Guy Fieri of “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” visited an American Indian Eatery in Denver earlier this year.

Ben Jacobs and family friend Matt Chandra opened Tocabe two years ago and their menu is full of Indian classics. The main event is their Indian taco, which is totally loaded with all the fixings—beans, meat, onions, tomatoes, sour cream, lettuce and cheese. My stomach is growling and I already ate lunch.

The meat they offer is ground beef, chicken and bison. Dang, these Indian boys don’t mess around. I wonder if they paint up and hunt the bison themselves, jokes.

They also have different side dishes like wild rice and soup. They describe their food as “traditional flavors layered with modern twists,” according to their site. Their Osage hominy salsa sounds to die for with some spices, hominy and dried cranberries.

My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw they also offer wojapi. What better Indian meal then wojapi and a piece of frybread—of course my grandma’s wojapi will always be the best.

Tocabe is one of about a handful of American Indian restaurants. The scarce number of Indian restaurants is understandable because usually the only people who eat Indian tacos are usually Indians. Yet, Ben and Matt found a successful way to offer Native dishes in a restaurant setting, to everybody.

Blending culture with mainstream ideas is a perfect reflection of Tocabe. Their restaurant is pretty impressive and not to mention mouthwatering—can you say road trip?
