Geronimo
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A media network aimed at Native Americans is urging social network users to change their profile pictures to an image of Geronimo in honor of the legendary Apache warrior.
Indian Country Today put out the call to its Facebook and Twitter followers Thursday in response to the U.S. military's use of Geronimo as a code name for Osama bin Laden.
It asks followers and others to use the photo for the next two days to "honor the true spirit" of the 19th century warrior.
New Mexico Senator Tom Udall joined others Thursday in criticizing the U.S. military’s use of the code name Geronimo during the mission that led to Osama bin Laden’s death days ago.
The Democrat Udall praised the mission’s intent but said Geronimo’s association with the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks was “highly inappropriate and culturally insensitive.”
WASHINGTON (AP) — The top staffer for the Senate Indian Affairs Committee is objecting to the U.S. military's use of the code name "Geronimo" for Osama bin Laden during the raid that killed the al-Qaida leader.
Geronimo was an Apache leader in the 19th century who spent many years fighting the Mexican and U.S. armies until his surrender in 1886.
